When using an image with transparency in the textureFile property in a Surface3DSeries, the transparent parts are rendered as black.
The attached patch has modifications in the Surface gallery / Oscilloscope example, and hard-coded changes that fix the issue (you'll need an image file with alpha copied into qml/surfacegallery/opacitymask.png).
It cannot be used as-is because of the hard-coded parts.
