the documentation for ssl can't work In unix (including macosx), the local varialbe have to be set before calling the command to execute.

if you do that on mac, you get an error.
The variable has to be before the configure:

OPENSSL_LIBS='-L/opt/ssl/lib -lssl -lcrypto' ./configure -openssl-linked
