Characters all wrong Qt Installer and Qt 5 Creator

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=152717&p=1000871I'm using lxde on Debian 8 over vnc (ditto xfce on Ubuntu 16 over vnc)
So, when I download & run the Qt installer then when I try to type using any kind of virtual keyboard, MacBook Pro keyboard or iPad Pro keyboard I get wrong characters from the keyboard ("b" instead of "s", "Backspace" instead of "5"), looks like some encoding is not right. The problem appears with Qt Creator when installed from directly but not for Qt app like Tea!
What's going on and is it fixable?
(Obviously all other text entry is normal)
