support configure probes

    Description

      Support (cached) configure probes. Tests like these are useful:

      • check if file exists (in search path)
      • compile tests
      • tool run tests

      The basic idea is that configure probes would be pulled in like all other modules via Depends/Recommends/Suggests items.
