Helper grid color is not calculated correctly when there are objects behind the grid. This is especially obvious if you set background color to something extreme like #00ff00 (full green) and put e.g. a red object behind it. You can see that where the grid should fade away on top of the red object, it actually goes green (which would be correct if the object wasn't there).
