Dragging a material onto the component in the navigation view just moves it but doesn't apply it to the component itself. To apply it you need to drag it from the material browser view onto the component. However, it would also be good if doing that in the navigator view is also allowed. 

Look at the screenshot to get the idea. After dragging it in the navigator view, it just moved the position but was not applied to the component itself.
