Cleanup before and after adding features

If you add more and more code to a function the functions gets harder and harder to understand.

I would propose that is good practice to refactor functions before you add the feature and again after you add them.

If the different code section in the code get a name and defined in- and output (aka functions) they are much faster to understand.
