QML viewer displays mostly blank window on X11

When launched, qml viewer shows a small, blank window and a file dialog. When selecting a demo from the file dialog (e.g. minehunt), the window gets bigger, but only an area the size of the original window actually displays anything – as shown in the attached screenshot.

Covering and then uncovering the window (or minimizing then restoring) will cause it to repaint correctly.
