I think it would be useful to have the state of the QValidator connected to a widget available to the style sheet system as pseudo states. This way, it would become trivial to make for instance an input box appear highlighted if the contents are invalid. Just setting a validator and a style sheet would suffice. Perhaps :valid, :invalid and :intermediate would do?
