Map falls off the end of the earth

Start mapviewer, zoom out to about 3-4 zoom level, then repeatedly try to scroll south past the south pole. Eventually a state will be reached where the map is completely grey, nothing is displayed, and all attempts to change zoom level or pan meet with no resistance but also no results.
