Apple introduced the option to automatically hide the menu bar with OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

If QSystemTrayIcon::setIcon is called while the menu bar is hidden the icon will remain invisible.

Go to System Preferences > General and check "Automatically hide and show the menu bar".

Then run the example. If the setIcon is invoked while the menu bar is hidden the spot where the icon is supposed to go will be blank.

I haven't checked Qt 5.5.1 yet but I did not find any changelog regarding this issue in the release not. But I will test this today with Qt 5.5.1
