Key event and shortcut handling cleanup

    Description

      We seem to have close to zero test-coverage of key events, and very little of shortcut events, which results in a lot of slight behavior differences between platforms, and regular regressions when something is fixed.

      This task is trying to track the various issue in the area, and opportunities for improving on the situation.
