There is no way of compiling generic input method plugins without hard linking them into Qt QPA plugins

      When building Qt 5.6, libraries found and needed by plugins are linked to modules with no reason.

      By enabling tslib, libinput and evdev, the EGLFS plugin (to name one) is linked to all of them without the need for it. This makes modular packaging extremely hard, as the dependencies are completely monolithic.
