      Windows: read from PE metadata
      Windows Runtime: read from the application manifest using APIs
      Apple Platforms: read from CFBundleVersion in Info.plist using APIs
      Android: read from AndroidManifest.xml using APIs
      Linux/UNIX: perhaps some ELF .gnu.version section or .qt.version section? or continue defaulting to empty string...
