print/printPDF renders canvas objects incorrectly

Any canvas element in an html page gets rendered to the pdf (save-as or intermediate file for printing) at the screen resolution, not the printer resolution. This causes all canvas items (charting for example) to appear fuzzy and indistinct - text in particular is unreadable in the output PDF. Non-canvas items (text elements) render correctly.
