Could use the recently added graphicsApi() static getter in QQuickWindow. (that tells us what the RHI backend choice would be if the scenegraph was initialized at that point)
QQuick3D::idealSurfaceFormat should not do OpenGL stuff when Quick is not going to use OpenGL
