Gradients don't render as expected when writing to PDF

      Gradients do not paint correctly to PDF.   See attached script, which paints the same 2 boxes - one with gradient and one without - to a PNG and to a PDF file.   In the PNG, both boxes get drawn as expected, but in the PDF, only the box that has no gradient is drawn.
