Adding children to a c++ model from qml creates phantom duplicate child

Setting up code in qml to add a child to an object inside a model property passed from c++ and immediately then expanding the parent object displays two copies of the child object. The model while set to single selection has both duplicate children selected if one is selected, and the rowCount of the parent object reflects only one child added.
