Pressing ESC button makes the QtC return to Edit mode if it is in the Help mode.

However if the Help mode is triggered (F1) from a editor window other than the main editor window, the Help view is shown in the main QtC window, which is OK.
In this case, ESC doesn't close the Help view. The focus goes to the other editor window. The main window remains in the Help mode.

ESC works as expected if an output pane is open in Edit mode and ESC is pressed while the focus is in an editor window other than them main window.
