Can't use mingw debugger

The gdb debugger from the mingw tools is not detected automatically. If I select gdb.exe manually, and exit the settings dialog and return to it, it is detected as type "GDB", but when I add it to the kit and try to run an executable with it, the entry is returned to "Not recognized".
