Qt Creator and cmake.exe each have 100% cpu load after switching git branch

After checking out a different git branch, cmake.exe and qtcreator.exe sometimes loop forever: both process have full cpu load on one core, cmake memory consumption rises rapidly until the whole system crashes or hangs due to out of memory errors.
