Qt creator v6 will not start after applying latest update

just applied the latest update to Qt 6
pixelbook: chrome os Version 87.0.4280.47 (Official Build) beta (64-bit)
linux debian buster

the qt creator will not start from the Chrome os icon. I did a manual start and received the following messages in the terminal window

qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, xcb.
