Optimize GUI usage in tabbed editor mode for better space utilization and aesthetics. Position the tabs lane in the location of the drop down menu in legacy mode, rather than on an additional dedicated lane. The legacy lane is almost empty and largely unused anyway. See the provided mock-up image.
