When calling performOperation() to update an environment variable in connection to the Finish button clicked it will hang

When calling performOperation() to update an environment variable in connection to the Finish button clicked it will hang. This appears to be happening because the operation is performed as threaded. If it is done in the main thread then everything is fine.
