Improve or replace the 'make check-trusted' mechanism

      We should consider if the 'make check-trusted' mechanism is really what we need for automatic performance tracking.

      Limitations include:

      • it only works on the test case level (it's impossible to disable individual test functions for example)
      • it doesn't distinguish between different platforms (a test case is either enabled or disabled on all platforms)
