Error starting services on windows compiled with mingw

When starting a service compiled with mingw (from the sdk) on windows the service fails to start and windows reports the crash with a popup. I tried all the examples and a couple of other services and all gave the same problem. They work flawlessly if compiled with MSVC 2008.
