VS's own and 3rd-party Status Bar messages are gone

Reproduce:

1. Open a solution.
2. Invoke some action that normally sets a Status Bar message, e.g. File.SaveAll
   (regardless how: via the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut, the File menu, the Standard toolbar, or the Command Window).

Expected: the message is there, e.g. "Item(s) Saved".

Actual: there's NO message.

Note: this affects 3^rd-party too, e.g. ReSharper C++.
