i tried to customize a page's TOC according to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Table_of_contents#Depth, which was an epic failure.

the wiki generally seems rather "bare-bones" compared to wikipedia, so i conclude that the installation is incomplete or badly customized.
