The clean whitespace option is generally a good thing for source files.

However, it also applies to other file types where it is not a good thing.

Specifically, when opening <file>.patch files (in the standard editor), the space does not want to be removed from the matching part of the original file - otherwise the patch will fail to apply the hunk.
